Junior Coding with Scratch

If you can imagine it, you can build it!
Do you love telling stories, sharing ideas, and creating games?
Kids will utilize Scratch Junior, a visual programming language, to build their own characters, scenes, and bring them to life through interactive stories and games.
Learn the basics of problem-solving and coding through visual programming blocks. Best of all, since Scratch Jr is a free app, you can create your own account and keep working on your project at home!

Ages 5 - 7 years

Mechatronics Master Minds: Young Inventors!

This fall kids will build, create, and invent as they explore the basics of mechatronics engineering, logic-based programming using littleBits. They will work together to design gadgets, tools, and machines from self-driving vehicles and art machines to a Chain Reaction Contraption.
Our mission is to empower everyone to create and invent.

Junior Robotics

Our little engineers will play and learn with Lego WeDo Construction Kits.
They will work as young scientists, engineers, and mathematicians to build robots that engage different core elements of coding and simple machines while solving simple challenges.
This highly engaging camp builds early STEM and spatial skills. Together we will foster a love of science, exploration, and nature.

Sphero Robotics & Coding

Do you love robots and have a passion for coding and adventure? This class is for you!
The young engineers will program and code their robots to complete awesome activities.
Program a painting. Navigate a maze. Mimic the solar system. Swim across the water. Have a dance party… The only limit is your imagination. We thrive to inspire curiosity, creativity, and invention!

In our first junior discovery program kids will explore the different disciplines of the engineering world.
From Electrical and mechanical engineering to aerospace and civil engineering. Kids will use the engineering design process to build bridges, magical boomerang cans and more!

Electrified: Explore the world Electrical Engineering!

Students are introduced to the concepts of circuit design, building, and testing through various hands-on activities. Students will walk away with exciting take home builds and an in-depth knowledge of circuits.
Students will:
Build a car-like model that levitates using magnets. Have a firm understanding of how an electrical circuit works, by building their own flash lights.
Learn how to transform wind energy into electricity as they build wind turbines. Explore the concepts behind electric magnetism; they will build and test an electric magnet.

Mini Winter Camp (Teachers' Convention) Feb 13 & 14

February 13, 2020 - EV3 Robotic Games

Do you love Lego? Do you love robots and have a passion for adventure? This is YOUR camp!

Build, wire, and program your own robot to compete in various games. Customize and program your robot to complete an obstacle course and challenge other team robots in the ultimate Sumo Bot Battle! Learn valuable skills in coding, problem-solving, and engineering while designing your robot to meet every challenge.

We will end the session with some mechanical engineering work as kids learn about projectiles, force, and trajectory as they build catapults. 

February 14, 2020 - The Theme Park Mania: Minecraft EDU and Electrical Engineering

This camp is designed to introduce students to the concepts of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and the Engineering Design Process.

 Students will design simulation roller coasters and other amusement park attractions in Minecraft making them run as autonomously as possible.

During the afternoon, kids will explore the world of electrical engineering as they build their own flashlights.

Game Design: Space Invaders! Don't just play video games, build your own. 

Use Blockly to learn how to create a Space Invaders game!

Command an alien space fleet to save your home planet from a global catastrophe. Build a fleet of drone ships using advanced top-secret technologies, like algorithms, sequence, iteration, and branching. On your journey to Earth, meet the Doctor, slingshot around a black hole, land on distant moons and mine for valuable resources. Your mission is to outsmart Earth’s Global Defense System in your quest for precious water.

Master Machines: Discover the world of Mechanical Engineering and Hydraulics

Students use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and improve a variety of machines and mechanical systems. Students learn the basics of energy, traction, aerodynamics, and durability while constructing dragsters,  eggstreme defense vehicles, and a hydraulic claw that works just like the games in an arcade. Move the upper cylinder and watch your claw open and close below. Can you design a claw to pick up specific objects (worms, marshmallows, balls)?

 **Important Information**

Registration deadlines for each session are one (1) week prior to course start date. In order to guarantee your spot we strongly recommend signing up early! Classes fill up quickly and in an effort to keep our instructor/student ratios low we do limit registration numbers in each class. Late registrations will be accepted provided there is space available in the class. We reserve the right to cancel classes if minimum numbers are not met by the registration deadline. Member rates are available for Cardel Rec South Founding Members as well as members of the following community associations: Millrise, Midnapore, Sundance, Shawnessy, Evergreen, Shawnee, Chaparral, Bridlewood, Somerset & Silverado.

Refund Policy: Refunds requested up to one week prior to the start date of desired program will receive a full refund. For cancellations within 7 days of the program start date or if the program has started Refunds will only be issued for medical reasons, and will require a doctors note prior to the the refund being processed.

The refund amounts will be pro-rated based upon the number of classes remaining in the program. All refunds requested after the registration deadline, regardless of the reason are subject to a $10.00 admin fee.

Please Note: There will be a $45.00 fee charged on all NSF cheques posted to South Fish Creek Recreation Association.
